Opinion: Oscar Sudy’s smart political moves guided by a playbook

Kapseret MP Oscar Sudy’s political journey is one of a kind,surrounded by many mysteries majority of which remain unknown to the public. However those who have keenly watched his rise in politics notice that he works his way up in a calculative and most a times resilient manner.

He is now rated as one of the most powerful politicians in North Rift region which can be attributed to his strong spirit and acumen.

His meteoric rise stuns both friend and foe who agree that the former matatu tout has earned his way up through sheer hard work, unwavering focus and that he has been a go-getter. His political star is shining bright.

Analysts have linked Sudy’s political modus operandi to that of his mentor the Deputy President William Ruto who can manipulate his political target to benefit himself.

The politician-cum-businessman has a magnetic presence with crowds because he knows how to connect with various political stakeholders at different levels.

His recent stand to support embattled Nandi Hills MP Alfred Ketter has forced many of us to retrospectively look at how he defies the odds to defend his colleague,through his well calculated political moves. Though Ketter has been deserted by his URP colleagues including members of the famous ‘Sky Team’, Sudy is the only MP who chose to stick with him.

The lawmaker has also surprised many with his new found good working relationship with Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago. He has recently been seen in the company of Mandago driving the message clear that he has established rapport with him and have virtually mended their fences. The most likely beneficiary of this new friendship is definitely Sudy.

Sudy also represented and spoke on behalf of Jubilee during the recent requiem mass for the late Otieno Kajwang. As other Jubilee allied speakers were booed, surprisingly he was well received by the crowds at Uhuru Park indicating a carefully calibrated political move that cuts across the divide.

It is only when you take a closer look at Sudy’s political chess board that you are grudgingly mesmerized by his political style which can be likened to the ‘tiki-taka’ footballing style of Barcelona Football Club and the Spanish national team.

The tiki taka style of play is characterized by possessing the ball for large portions of the game, moving the ball quickly from one player to the next and in and out of the opponent, breaking them down with short passes. Essentially, the key idea with tiki taka is to always keep the ball away from your opponent and then to deliver that killer pass to score a goal.

In fact, contrary to popular belief, before he was elected to represent Kapseret,Sudy had been actively involved in politics for a record ten years, having joined the political arena in 2002 when he campaigned for the Former Eldoret South MP David Koros who successfully clinched the parliamentary seat. As a young politician, he was entangled in tough political battles especially when he later decamped Koros to campaign for Peris Simam who toppled an experienced Koros from the seat in 2007. It is then that it became apparent to political observers that his political life had begun to shape up.

It is very evident that Sudy knows how to control his political game, and seriously has a playbook with a political game plan that is surely bearing fruits for him.
