Professor PLO Lumumba reading the banner of The Alumni Magazine that was launched.
Kapsabet High School launched its Alumni magazine over the weekend. The launch of the magazine whose slogan is “our alma mater” was well attended.
Nandi County Governor Dr Cleophas Lagat, Professor Jacob Lagat (Egerton University), Prof Mining (Moi University) the BOG Chairman Lt. Gen(rtd) Augustine Cheruiyot to name a few, were in attendance.
The Chief Guest Kenya School of Law Executive Director Professor PLO Lumumba presided over the launch.
Professor Lumumba lauded the initiative saying there was need for schools to have vibrant alumni bodies and encouraged students and parents to support the initiative.
“You now have an opportunity to cross pollinate and cross fertilize your minds with that of great men and women in the world,”he said.
He called upon School Principals and Management, to take part in the adventure observing that few years down the line, the culture will have been created in other Schools.
He noted that having a vibrant alumni body will help in motivating current students, establishing an endowment fund for the needy students and helping the School in its development agenda.
The pioneer launch of the Alumni Magazine is likely to trigger the establishment of Alumni associations in other school from the region.
History has shown the importance of Alumni Associations worldwide. Yearbooks are also being used internationally by graduating students to capture their lives in school with their own customized quotes. They do this with famous quotes, song lyrics and funny quotes that will be published along with their photos. Such yearbooks are very interesting later in life when one goes back to check on them. This can be by family members, friends or colleagues. Now with the online version, data is captured and frozen for eternity while a hard copy of the yearbook is stored in the school library.
Jonathan Misoi, the Founder and CEO of The Alumni, believes that going forward, the alumni will play a greater role in the development agenda of all schools.
Mr Misoi is currently the Vice Chairman Kapsabet Boys Alumni Association on his website (www.yearbook.co.ke) has urged others to read and understand how this concept works and what will be required from their school.
Online readers will also get to know about his company based in Eldoret.
The Alumni Magazine tries to highlight accomplishments by alumni from various schools, colleges and universities in Kenya
It also provides a way for alumni to give back to their alma mater. The students get to also provide their inspiring quotes on a yearbook inside the magazine
On who can qualify to be the Cover Page Model:
Misoi notes that it must be distinguished Alumni of that School who include those in the following fields:
1. Academics– Professors, Scientists, Teachers, Educationists etc
2. Entrepreneurs– CEOs, MDs, Innovators, Marketers, Technologists etc
3.Leaders -Politicians (Governors, Senators, MPs, Women Reps, MCAs, CSs, PSs, Civil Servants), Religious Leaders, Civil Society Leaders etc by way of giving back to their School/alma mater
4.Celebrities– Artists, Comedians, Accomplished Sportsment/Athletes etc
In his parting shot Misoi quotes Oscar Wilde “Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.””
