  • Excerpt from “Minutes of the Fourth Annual Session of the Farmers State Alliance of Alabama” held in Auburn

    The passage includes a letter from the Alliance to the editors of the Montgomery Advertiser, criticizing the newspaper for its apparent support of the "jute trust." In 1888 the jute manufacturers had raised the price of jute bagging, which was used to bale cotton. Farmers were unable to afford the increase, so the Alliance organized a boycott against the material; by 1890 jute prices had lowered again.
